ACI Grade I Exam Prep: Pair Method Recall With Apparatus Practice

Prepare for ACI Grade I in two parallel tracks: understand the seven methods and practice the required physical steps with actual equipment. Neither track replaces the other.

At a glance

What is the ACI Grade I credential?

ACI Grade I certifies knowledge and hands-on ability to perform and record seven field tests on freshly mixed concrete. Both written and performance examinations are required.

FIELD NOTE 01

Start with the official skill inventory

Read the JTA linked on the ACI program page and use the current workbook. List apparatus, sequence, recording, and common errors separately for each method without reproducing protected procedure text.

  • C1064/C1064M: concrete temperature
  • C172/C172M: sampling freshly mixed concrete
  • C143/C143M: slump
  • C138/C138M: density, yield, and gravimetric air content
  • C231/C231M: pressure-method air content
  • C173/C173M: volumetric-method air content
  • C31/C31M: making and curing field specimens

FIELD NOTE 02

Alternate recall and observed practice

After a knowledge session, explain the procedure from memory, then practice with suitable apparatus and qualified instruction. Have the observer record missed steps for another session.

  • Retrieve the purpose and sequence
  • Practice actual setup and handling
  • Log the observed gap and repeat with feedback

FIELD NOTE 03

Plan access before the examination

Contact a sponsoring group about training and performance preparation. Confirm equipment access, appointment requirements, and whether training and testing are included in the same fee.

  • Find a group through ACI
  • Ask about apparatus practice
  • Reserve time for weak methods rather than only full written sets
