ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade I: Written and Hands-On Requirements

ACI Grade I requires both a written examination and a performance examination. Build a seven-method study record and arrange actual apparatus practice; an online course alone cannot confer this certification.

At a glance

What is the ACI Grade I credential?

FIELD NOTE 01

What the credential covers

ACI defines this program around performing and recording seven basic field tests on freshly mixed concrete. Use the official JTA and current workbook for each required skill.

  • C1064/C1064M: concrete temperature
  • C172/C172M: sampling freshly mixed concrete
  • C143/C143M: slump
  • C138/C138M: density, yield, and gravimetric air content
  • C231/C231M: pressure-method air content
  • C173/C173M: volumetric-method air content
  • C31/C31M: making and curing field specimens

FIELD NOTE 02

Two examinations, not one online score

The written examination is closed-book: 55 multiple-choice items in one hour, with at least 70% overall and 60% on each required method/practice. Performance requires actual demonstration of six methods plus verbal description of C172 sampling. [ACI program: Certification Requirements]

  • Track each method, not only the overall score
  • Arrange real apparatus practice
  • Schedule through a sponsoring group

FIELD NOTE 03

Testing, fees, and recertification

The ACI page provides a testing-location finder. Confirm dates, fees, materials, and equipment arrangements with the group. Certification lasts five years; recertification requires both written and performance examinations. [ACI program: Certification Requirements]

  • Confirm a real local session
  • Ask what is included in its fee
  • Keep the expiry date and both-exam renewal requirement
