Inspection Calculation Checks: Units, Arithmetic, and Decision Limits

Two worked fictional arithmetic checks plus a reusable worksheet. Supplied training values are not code acceptance limits or field-testing instructions.

Free. No account or email gate. Original preparation aid, not credential or project approval.

Relative-compaction arithmetic

Training inputs only: field dry density 118 lb/ft³ and reference dry density 125 lb/ft³. Divide 118 by 125 and multiply by 100 to obtain 94.4%. Both values must use the same units. No acceptance target is supplied, so no pass/fail conclusion is supported.

  • Record field and reference values separately
  • Check compatible units
  • Compute and independently verify 94.4%
  • Do not infer a required compaction target

Measurement-change arithmetic

Fictional repeated measurements at the same stated point: 0.500 in initially and 0.470 in four years later. The arithmetic change is 0.030 in, or 0.0075 in/year over that interval. This alone does not establish a corrosion mechanism, future rate, remaining life, or inspection interval.

  • Difference: 0.500 minus 0.470 = 0.030 in
  • Interval: four years
  • Arithmetic rate: 0.030 divided by 4 = 0.0075 in/year
  • Record comparability and evaluation limitations

Use a calculation review record

Keep inputs, units, source, arithmetic, rounding, and intended decision together. A valid equation can still be applied to incompatible measurements or the wrong condition.

  • Inputs and measurement provenance
  • Unit conversions and arithmetic
  • Independent check and rounding
  • Applicable criterion and authorized decision-maker

Worked fictional example

A result without an acceptance conclusion

You calculate 94.4% but are not given the project target or whether the reference test represents this material.

Reveal the model response

Arithmetic result: 94.4%, using supplied same-unit values. Compliance is undetermined because the project acceptance requirement and applicable material/reference-test match were not supplied.

These are original arithmetic exercises, not testing procedures, code criteria, or professional engineering evaluations.
